I am drawn to ceramics both because of its history as well as the nature of its materials and processes. The functional object brings with it a reference to sustenance, ritual and ceremony. While some of my pieces might actually be used, in others I quietly allude to the idea of function. In either case, I am interested in the functional object because anyone, anywhere has the innate ability to relate to it.
By using modern packing materials as molds and leaving evident the barcodes on these molds, my intent is to bring together the hand made quality of traditional arts and the mass production of consumer items. I look to combine characteristics from past rituals and other cultures with rituals more relevant to the society I live in. My intent is to create postmodern relics that, in time, will reflect my society and how it functioned.
